4D Scan

When can this scan be done:
25 – 27 weeks
4D scans can be done at any time, however 25 – 26 weeks have been found to be the most opportune time to do a 4D scan. It is a time when the baby is not too big yet and there is still ample amniotic fluid. When the baby becomes too big and the amniotic fluid less the baby pushes up against the walls of the womb and cannot be visualised properly.
The aims of the scan:
- The aims of the scan are the same as with the growth and Doppler scan, but with the majority of time spent making pretty pictures and clips of the movement in 3D and 4D.
If a formal 20 – 22 week scan was not done, the structures of the baby will have to be assessed at this time. This is for liability purposes and according the Guidelines for 4D scanning outlined by South Africa’s governing bodies for ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SASOG and SASUOG).
